Catholics, Baptists Come Together Over Conscience-Rights Bill

Archbishop William Lori and Russell Moore of the Southern Baptist Convention are  united by the belief that Congress must act to help preserve freedom of religion  and conscience.

WASHINGTON — Catholic and Baptist leaders are collaborating to ask national  legislators to support a bill that would offer conscience protections to  health-care workers across the country.

“While Catholics and Southern Baptists espouse different theological views,  we are united by the belief that Congress must act to help preserve our freedom  of religion and conscience,” Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore and Russell  Moore of the Southern Baptist Convention wrote in a June 21 letter to members of  Congress. . .  [Full story]

Southern Baptists urged to oppose HHS birth control mandate

The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptists has issued a fact sheet warning that the Obama administration’s birth control mandate “tramples religious freedom,” and has alerted church members to contact their senators to support proposed protection of conscience legislation. Southern Baptists denounce forced birth control insurance

A statement from the Southern Baptists has denounced the Obama administration’s regulation that will force employers to provide insurance coverage for surgical sterilization, contraceptives, and embryocidal drugs.  The statement describes the regulation as  “a clear violation of our nation’s commitment to liberty of conscience and a flagrant violation of our constitutional protection to freedom of religion.”  It was signed by Richard Land, President of the Southern Baptist’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission since 1988, and Barrett Duke one of the Commission’s directors.

 

Prominent Southern Baptist protests HHS mandate

Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has praised the willingness of Catholic bishops to go to jail rather than conform to the HHS regulation requiring them to provide insurance coverage for contraceptives, surgical sterilization and embryocides.  Mohler said, “[E]veryone who stands both for the sanctity of human life and for the mandate of religious liberty must express outrage in whatever form is available to us to the president of the United States.” [Associated Baptist Press]
