\n The controversial piece of legislation, which would have allowed\n health-care providers to refuse to provide certain medical services \nunder the guise of \u201cfreedom of conscience,\u201d was quashed Thursday night \nin committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a thinly-veiled effort to roll back abortion, assisted suicide and transgender rights as a concession to the religious right.
