Wesley Eli<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n        How should society respond to the increasingly long&nbsp;list of people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2018\/national\/organ-transplant-shortages\/?utm_term=.0f12370b4349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waiting for organs<\/a> on a transplant list?&nbsp;You\u2019ve no doubt heard of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2563357\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">black market<\/a>\u201d organs in foreign countries, but are there other options that should be off the table?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n        If you were on a transplant list, would it matter to you if the organ was obtained from a living person who died because of the donation procedure itself? What if she had volunteered?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n        Your thoughts on this topic have implications beyond the issue of transplantation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n        As the former co-director of Vanderbilt University\u2019s lung transplant program and a practicing intensive care unit&nbsp;physician, I see organ donation an selfless gift to those approaching death on transplant wait lists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>         However, I\u2019m wrestling with the emerging collision between the worlds of transplantation and euthanasia. . .
