Three years after Canada’s top court decriminalized \n\t\t\t\t\tdoctor-assisted suicide, the federal government is about to \n\t\t\t\t\twade into an emerging controversy: How to respond to \n\t\t\t\t\trequests from children for medical assistance in dying, or \n\t\t\t\t\tMAID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada’s largest children’s hospital has already gotten a \n\t\t\t\t\ttaste of this thorny issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We had discussed that there may be a time in the future \n\t\t\t\t\tthat MAID would be available for patients under the age of \n\t\t\t\t\t18, or a group called ‘mature minors,'” said Dr. Adam \n\t\t\t\t\tRapoport, director of the Pediatric Advanced Care team at \n\t\t\t\t\tToronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
