Only doctors who are willing to perform abortions will be considered \nfor two consultant posts at Dublin\u2019s National Maternity Hospital. The \nhospital is advertising for a consultant anaesthetist and a consultant \nin obstetrics and gynaecology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a statement from the NMH the \npositions include the \u201cprovision of termination-of-pregnancy services, \nand are for individuals willing to contribute to the provision of these \nservices\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A source at the hospital told the Irish Times \nthat conscientious objection guidelines for existing staff would remain \nas they were before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baroness Nuala O\u2019Loan, of Northern Ireland, recently warned<\/a> that the Republic would be entering \u201cuncharted territory\u201d if it made willingness to perform abortions a condition of employment. What if doctors changed their mind, feeling in conscience that they could no longer participate in abortions, she asked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a referendum last year which allowed abortion to be legalised, Ireland is expanding its services quickly to provide abortions. The health department\u2019s budget provides \u20ac7 million in funding for abortion services this year and \u20ac12 million in 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
