{"id":8667,"date":"2018-04-06T14:01:02","date_gmt":"2018-04-06T21:01:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=8667"},"modified":"2018-08-22T14:09:50","modified_gmt":"2018-08-22T21:09:50","slug":"the-eighth-amendment-and-right-to-conscientious-objection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=8667","title":{"rendered":"The Eighth Amendment and right to conscientious objection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>The Irish Times<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n(Letters to the editor)<\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Fiona de Londras<\/p>\n<p>Sir, \u2013 Thomas Ryan (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/letters\/myths-and-lies-about-abortion-must-be-debunked-1.3450548\">April 5th<\/a>) claims that &#8220;Once the so-called &#8220;right to choose&#8221; is placed on legal footing, it is quickly transformed into the right to force people to pay for abortions and force medical professionals to perform them&#8221;.\u00a0 . . .<\/p>\n<p>The right to conscientious objection has been enjoyed by Irish medics, healthcare professionals, and pharmacists for many years. . . but doctors and pharmacists have always had the right to refuse to prescribe or dispense contraception and emergency contraception.<\/p>\n<p>. . . The general scheme of the proposed post-repeal law explicitly protects individuals&#8217; right to conscientiously abstain from direct provision of abortion care.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ryan appears to object to the continuing obligation to refer a patient to another health care professional . . . Any other approach would privilege the right of a medic in a way that abandons and does harm to the pregnant person.
