{"id":8589,"date":"2018-02-20T18:54:47","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T02:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=8589"},"modified":"2018-07-09T18:59:38","modified_gmt":"2018-07-10T01:59:38","slug":"pregnant-women-in-rural-b-c-urged-to-leave-town-to-deliver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=8589","title":{"rendered":"Pregnant women in rural B.C. urged to leave town to deliver"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>40% of women in rural Canada have to drive at least 1 hour away for maternity services<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>CBC News<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Briar Stewart<\/p>\n<p>For pregnant women\u00a0in Fort Nelson, B.C., part of the prenatal routine includes\u00a0agreeing not to have their babies in the northern community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Due to staffing issues, we are unable to conduct safe obstetric care,&#8221; says the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/4312336-Document-for-CBC.html\"> memo from the health centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An official with Northern Health, which oversees\u00a0health centres in the region,\u00a0says while\u00a0physicians and staff are equipped to respond to \u00a0an &#8220;unplanned delivery,&#8221;\u00a0women are advised to leave up to a month before their due date because\u00a0&#8220;the safety of both the mother and the baby must come first.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fort Nelson, a community of 3,500, is\u00a0one of dozens of rural communities in Canada where maternity services have been eliminated, in part because of the ongoing struggle to\u00a0recruit and retain doctors in remote parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of intrapartum\u00a0care means some women have to travel hundreds of kilometres and pay thousands of dollars to have their babies, even though health experts say long-distance delivery can come with greater health risks. . .
