{"id":8498,"date":"2018-01-10T19:59:24","date_gmt":"2018-01-11T03:59:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=8498"},"modified":"2018-07-08T20:06:54","modified_gmt":"2018-07-09T03:06:54","slug":"doctors-set-to-fight-global-abortion-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=8498","title":{"rendered":"Doctors set to fight global abortion policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>The Catholic Register<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Michael Swan<\/p>\n<p>An ethics policy that demands doctors refer for abortion, even against their conscience, could become a global policy at the next general assembly of the World Medical Association in October.<\/p>\n<p>Catholic and Evangelical doctors in Canada are organizing to oppose the draft policy before it goes to the WMA council meetings in Latvia April 26-28.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have asked our members in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmdscanada.org\/\">Christian Medical and Dental Society<\/a> to write to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cma.ca\/en\/Pages\/cma_default.aspx\"> Canadian Medical Society<\/a> to ask them to lobby on our behalf, to ensure that that change does not get passed,&#8221; said Christian Medical and Dental Society of Canada executive director Deacon Larry Worthen.<\/p>\n<p>While a WMA ethics policy would have no legal effect in Canada, the organization&#8217;s policies are often a template for future legislation and regulation of the medical profession around the world, said Worthen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wma.net\/news-post\/world-medical-association-reiterates-strong-opposition-to-physician-assisted-suicide-and-to-australian-bill\/\"> WMA policies<\/a> are also influential in medical schools. . .\u00a0 <strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicregister.org\/item\/26642-doctors-set-to-fight-global-abortion-policy\">Full Text<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Catholic Register Michael Swan An ethics policy that demands doctors refer for abortion, even against their conscience, could become a global policy at the next general assembly of the World Medical Association in October.
