Discussions are already taking place to\u00a0 expand the criteria to minors, people with psychiatric illness and those with dementia. This puts people\u00a0 who are lonely and isolated at risk of choosing euthanasia simply because they don\u2019t have anyone\u00a0 who cares and can give them hope.<\/p>\n<h2>Today in Ontario:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Physicians and other caregivers are forced to\u00a0 participate in euthanasia against their will, by\u00a0referring their patients.<\/li>\n<li>Pro-euthanasia groups are threatening to sue\u00a0faith based hospitals unless they allow\u00a0 euthanasia on the premises.<\/li>\n<li>Only a third of the population has access to\u00a0adequate palliative care, so they are being\u00a0 denied real choice on end of life issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This places physicians, nurses and other health\u00a0 professionals in an impossible situation \u2013 assist in\u00a0 the killing of their patients or lose the ability to care\u00a0for patients at all.<\/p>\n<p>This is happening despite constitutional protections\u00a0for freedom of conscience and religion in the <em>Charter\u00a0 of Rights and Freedoms<\/em> (s.2).<\/p>\n<p>The Coalition for HealthCARE and Conscience\u00a0 represents more than 110 healthcare facilities (with\u00a0 almost 18,000 care beds and 60,000 staff) and more\u00a0than 5,000 physicians across Canada. Our members\u00a0are unable to participate in taking a patient\u2019s life due to moral or ethical convictions.<\/p>\n<h2>The Solution<\/h2>\n<p>The Ontario legislature has the power to protect conscience rights for individuals and facilities and to provide adequate palliative care and mental health services so that people will not see assisted suicide as their only option. Our efforts in Manitoba helped to ensure the province passed <a href=\"http:\/\/web2.gov.mb.ca\/laws\/statutes\/ccsm\/m092e.php\">conscience protection legislation <\/a>in November 2017.<\/p>\n<p>In advance of the June 2018 provincial election in Ontario, we have the opportunity to ask candidates from all parties three important questions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Will you support legislation to protect doctors, nurses and other health care providers who are being forced to participate in assisted suicide\/euthanasia through making a referral?<\/li>\n<li>How will you protect facilities from being forced to offer euthanasia\/assisted suicide on their premises?<\/li>\n<li>How does your party plan to address the lack of quality palliative care in our province?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To get involved, please participate in your Church\u2019s Sign Up Sunday.
