Protection of Conscience Project<\/p>\n

Pharmacists in Manitoba have decided that they should not be forced to be involved in medical procedures that they find morally abhorrent.<\/p>\n

The Annual General Meeting of the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association adopted a policy\u00a0that pharmacists may refuse to dispense certain drugs for reasons of conscience. Such\u00a0\u00a0policies exist in the United States, but it is believed that this is the first time a\u00a0\u00a0pharmacists\u2019 association in Canada has formally recognized the importance of freedom\u00a0of conscience.<\/p>\n

News of the development was conveyed to the Protection of Conscience Project in a\u00a0letter from Ronald F. Guse, Registrar of the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association.<\/p>\n

The Association rejected a clause that would have forced conscientious objectors to\u00a0involve themselves by making a referral to another pharmacist.<\/p>\n

“Pharmacists in Manitoba who voted for this measure should be congratulated and thanked by their colleagues,” said Sean Murphy, Administrator of the Protection of\u00a0Conscience Project. “The present concern among conscientious objectors is the\u00a0so-called \u2018morning-after-pill\u2019. However, if non-objecting pharmacists do not\u00a0support their colleagues on this issue, they should expect no support if they object to\u00a0\u00a0dispensing drugs for assisted suicide, euthanasia, and execution by lethal\u00a0injection.”<\/p>\n

“If that seems somewhat far-fetched,” Murphy added, “the College of\u00a0Pharmacists of British Columbia is already speculating about the expansion of pharmacy\u00a0services to include such procedures.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
