They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4900885\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> give birth to new neurons<\/a><sup class=\"footnote\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">2<\/span><\/sup>, much like full-blown brains. And they develop the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell-reports\/fulltext\/S2211-1247(17)31337-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> six layers<\/a><sup class=\"footnote\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">3<\/span><\/sup> of the human cortex, the region responsible for thought, speech, judgment, and other advanced cognitive functions.<\/p>\n<p>These micro quasi-brains are revolutionizing research on human brain development and diseases from Alzheimer&#8217;s to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell\/fulltext\/S0092-8674(16)30467-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Zika<\/a><sup class=\"footnote\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">4<\/span><\/sup>, but the headlong rush to\u00a0grow the most realistic, most highly developed brain organoids has thrown researchers into uncharted ethical waters.\u00a0Like virtually all experts in the field, neuroscientist\u00a0Hongjun Song of the University of Pennsylvania doesn&#8217;t &#8220;believe an organoid in a dish can think,&#8221; he said, &#8220;but it&#8217;s an issue we need to discuss.&#8221; . .
