{"id":7709,"date":"2017-04-10T10:20:55","date_gmt":"2017-04-10T17:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=7709"},"modified":"2018-03-05T18:32:51","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T02:32:51","slug":"amendments-to-protect-conscience-rights-on-the-table","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=7709","title":{"rendered":"Amendments to protect conscience rights on the table"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>The Catholic Register<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Michael Swan<\/p>\n<p>Amendments to a government bill have been forward that would protect Ontario&#8217;s doctors and nurses who, for reasons of conscience, cannot refer for medical assistance in dying (MAID).<\/p>\n<p>Conscience rights for doctors are coming up for a vote at Queen&#8217;s Park as amendments to Bill-84 which smooths the way for voluntary euthanasia makes its way through committee towards its final reading in the legislature.<\/p>\n<p>Progressive Conservative health critic Jeff Yurek has put forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicregister.org\/digital\/2017\/041617\/bill-84-amendment.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> two versions of an amendment<\/a> that would protect doctors and nurses who will not refer for MAID. The Yurek amendments protect medical professionals both from civil liability and from disciplinary action by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. . .
