{"id":7658,"date":"2017-10-26T20:21:13","date_gmt":"2017-10-27T03:21:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=7658"},"modified":"2018-03-03T20:57:12","modified_gmt":"2018-03-04T04:57:12","slug":"waiting-to-die-winnipeg-man-says-faith-based-hospital-delayed-access-to-assisted-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=7658","title":{"rendered":"Waiting to die: Winnipeg man says faith-based hospital delayed access to assisted death"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Timeline of events provided to CBC suggests Misericordia Health Centre delayed transfer of medical records<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>CBC News<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Holly Caruk, Bruce Hoye<\/p>\n<p>An 88-year-old Winnipeg man wants to end his life after being confined to a bed for several months\u00a0with no chance of recovering and says the faith-based hospital where he now lives is delaying that request.<\/p>\n<p>Cheppudira Gopalkrishna says the Misericordia Health Centre\u00a0did not help him with his initial request to access the province&#8217;s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) services, and has since delayed the process further by taking too long to transfer his medical records and delaying an in-person assessment by the MAID team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t say [my request was ignored, but it wasn&#8217;t placed in the highest priority,&#8221; he said from his hospital bed.<\/p>\n<p>The former school teacher has been at the\u00a0<span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\">Misericordia<\/span>\u00a0for several months, after his health declined significantly over the last year and a half.
