This response to your article Bacon, eggs and peace of mind: Pharmacists, Planned Parenthood push for prescription-free morning-after\u00a0pill<\/em> (17 November, 2002) has been delayed by the need to consult the\u00a0Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists.<\/p>\n

With respect to the \u2018morning-after-pill\u2019, your article attributed the following quote to Kelly Grover of Planned Parenthood: “Nobody is forcing pharmacists to prescribe this. There is a code of ethics that requires\u00a0them to refer patients.”<\/p>\n

In fact, the College\u2019s Code of Ethics <\/em>does not<\/em> require referral. A pharmacist who objects to providing a drug for reasons of conscience is\u00a0to advise an employer of that fact when being hired. It then becomes the\u00a0obligation of the employer<\/em>, not the pharmacist, to find an alternative means to deliver the drug.<\/p>\n

The disclosure requirement in the Code of Ethics <\/em>is intended to ensure\u00a0that the freedom of conscience of pharmacists is fully respected, without\u00a0preventing patients from getting drugs or services that they want.\u00a0 Unscrupulous employers could misuse the disclosure requirement by using it to identify conscientious objectors and deny them employment. One hopes\u00a0that the College will defend pharmacists against this form of\u00a0discrimination, as it would be a pity to see Nova Scotians forced to leave\u00a0home to seek employment in more tolerant environments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
