{"id":7083,"date":"2016-08-22T13:58:30","date_gmt":"2016-08-22T20:58:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=7083"},"modified":"2018-03-06T15:17:13","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T23:17:13","slug":"vancouver-bishop-speaks-out-on-conscience-rights-end-of-life-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=7083","title":{"rendered":"Vancouver bishop speaks out on conscience rights, end-of-life care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>LifeSite News<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Lianne Laurence<\/p>\n<p>VANCOUVER, August 22, 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/\">(LifeSiteNews)<\/a> \u2014 Archbishop Michael Miller has reaffirmed that health care practitioners cannot be \u201cpressured or coerced\u201d into providing assisted suicide or euthanasia, which are now legal in Canada under Bill C-14, passed June 17.<\/p>\n<p>In an August 11 letter to all hospitals and Catholic health care institutions in his diocese of approximately 430,000 Catholics, Miller stated that the \u201cconscience of caregivers, physicians, nurses, and support staff must always be respected\u201d and health care professionals should not be discriminated against for refusing to kill their patients by medical means or refusing to provide a \u201cdirect effective referral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe maintain as a fundamental principle that any action or omission which of itself or by intention causes or hastens death is a grave violation of the commandment: \u2018You shall not kill\u2019,\u201d he wrote. . .
