{"id":7072,"date":"2016-09-22T16:56:46","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T23:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=7072"},"modified":"2016-11-21T17:01:23","modified_gmt":"2016-11-22T01:01:23","slug":"7072","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=7072","title":{"rendered":"Ban conscientious objection by Canadian doctors, urge ethicists in volatile\u00a0commentary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>National Post<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Tom Blackwell<\/p>\n<p>Authorities should bar doctors from refusing to provide such services as abortion and assisted death on moral grounds, and screen out potential medical students who might impose their values on patients, leading Canadian and British bioethicists argue in a provocative new commentary.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/bioe.12288\/full\"> paper by professors at Queen\u2019s and Oxford<\/a> universities, who are also editors of two major bioethics journals, throws rocket fuel onto a debate already inflamed by the new law allowing assisted death.<\/p>\n<p>They argue that physicians have no right to opt out of lawful medical services \u2014 from abortion to prescribing contraceptives \u2014 that are requested by a patient and in the person\u2019s interest.<\/p>\n<p>Those who let conscientious objection affect patient care are clearly unprofessional, say Udo Schuklenk and Julian Savulescu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctors must put patients\u2019 interests ahead of their own integrity,\u201d they write in the journal Bioethics. . .
