{"id":7061,"date":"2016-09-27T13:46:06","date_gmt":"2016-09-27T20:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=7061"},"modified":"2018-03-05T14:24:40","modified_gmt":"2018-03-05T22:24:40","slug":"b-c-man-faced-excruciating-transfer-after-catholic-hospital-refused-assisted-death-request","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=7061","title":{"rendered":"B.C. man faced excruciating transfer after Catholic hospital refused assisted-death\u00a0request"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>National Post<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Tom Blackwell<\/p>\n<p>Ian Shearer had had enough of the pain and wanted a quick, peaceful end, his life marred by multiple afflictions.<\/p>\n<p>But the Vancouver man\u2019s family says his last day alive became an excruciating ordeal after the Catholic-run hospital caring for him rebuffed his request for a doctor-assisted death, forcing him to transfer to another hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The combination of the cross-town trip and inadequate pain control left Shearer, 84, in agony through most of his final hours, says daughter Jan Lackie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo hear him crying out, screaming \u2026 was just horrible,\u201d said Lackie, breaking into tears as she recalled the day in late August. \u201cThat\u2019s what keeps me from sleeping at night \u2026 I don\u2019t want any other person to go through what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shearer\u2019s experience at St. Paul\u2019s Hospital highlights one of the thorniest issues concerning assisted death: the decision of most faith-based \u2014\u00a0 but taxpayer-funded \u2014 health-care facilities to play no part in a practice made legal by the Supreme Court of Canada and federal legislation. . .
