{"id":6384,"date":"2015-11-19T01:20:22","date_gmt":"2015-11-19T09:20:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=6384"},"modified":"2018-03-05T22:48:35","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T06:48:35","slug":"what-happens-when-a-patients-right-to-die-and-a-doctors-right-to-refuse-collide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=6384","title":{"rendered":"What happens when a patient&#8217;s right to die and a doctor&#8217;s right to refuse\u00a0collide?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Saskatoon StarPhoenix<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Jonathan Charlton<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cps.sk.ca\/\">College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan<\/a> is set to finalize a policy to guide the province\u2019s doctors on the controversial issue of doctor assisted death.<\/p>\n<p>While the Supreme Court of Canada has struck down the old law <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/supreme-court-of-canada-strikes-down-ban-on-doctor-assisted-suicide\"> forbidding the service<\/a>, the former Conservative government didn\u2019t introduce new legislation. The new Liberal government, meanwhile, could ask for an extension to the court\u2019s Feb. 6, 2016 deadline.<\/p>\n<p>However, the College\u00a0doesn\u2019t want doctors in\u00a0the province to be stranded without any guidance, hence its own\u00a0policy, which could be finalized at the College\u2019s meeting Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Associate registrar Bryan Salte walked the Saskatoon StarPhoenix through the complex issue.
