{"id":6234,"date":"2015-08-20T16:44:30","date_gmt":"2015-08-20T23:44:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=6234"},"modified":"2018-03-06T15:04:25","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T23:04:25","slug":"turning-physicians-into-executioners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=6234","title":{"rendered":"Turning physicians into executioners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>National Post<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Sean Murphy<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consciencelaws.org\/authors.aspx#Sean_Murphy\" target=\"_blank\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) convenes in Halifax this month for its Annual General Council, delegates will confront what the CMA\u2019s Dr. Jeff Blackmer has called the biggest change in the medical profession in Canada, maybe in centuries: the legalization of physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia ordered by the Supreme Court of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, when announcing the intention of the CMA to intervene in the Carter case at the Supreme Court, Dr. Blackmer and CMA President Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti reflected on what was at stake.<\/p>\n<p>One person\u2019s right is another person\u2019s obligation, and sometimes great burden, they wrote. And in this case, a patient\u2019s right to assisted dying becomes the physician\u2019s obligation to take that patient\u2019s life. . .
