{"id":5962,"date":"2014-08-19T19:33:20","date_gmt":"2014-08-20T02:33:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=5962"},"modified":"2018-03-05T22:50:20","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T06:50:20","slug":"canadian-medical-association-softens-stand-on-assisted-suicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=5962","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Medical Association softens stand on assisted suicide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Globe and Mail<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Andr\u00e9 Picard<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Medical Association, which has a long-standing policy saying doctors should not participate in euthanasia or assisted suicide, is substantially softening its stance.<\/p>\n<p>Delegates to the organization&#8217;s general council decided Tuesday that the CMA now &#8220;supports the right of all physicians, within the bounds of existing legislation, to follow their conscience when deciding whether to provide medical aid in dying.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The carefully crafted position is an acknowledgment that, while assisting death is still a crime in Canada, the attitudes of Canadians, including those of physicians, are changing quickly, and so is the law.<\/p>\n<p>While the group&#8217;s official policy has not changed, &#8220;it&#8217;s only a matter of time,&#8221; said Louis Francescutti, outgoing president of the CMA.
