{"id":5823,"date":"2015-04-01T00:10:52","date_gmt":"2015-04-01T07:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=5823"},"modified":"2018-03-07T11:08:12","modified_gmt":"2018-03-07T19:08:12","slug":"canadian-medical-schools-readying-doctors-to-talk-to-patients-about-assisted-suicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=5823","title":{"rendered":"Canadian medical schools readying doctors to talk to patients about assisted suicide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>National Post<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Sharon Kirkey<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s medical schools are preparing for what was once unimaginable \u2014 teaching medical students and residents how to help patients take their own lives.<\/p>\n<p>As the nation moves toward legalized physician-assisted death, Canada\u2019s 17 faculties of medicine have begun to consider how they will introduce assisted dying into the curriculum for the next generations of doctors.<\/p>\n<p>It is a profound change for medical educators, who have long taught future doctors that it is immoral to end a life intentionally.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If legislation passes, and if it becomes a standard of practice in Canada for a small subset of patients who desire assisted death, and where all the conditions are met, would we want a cadre of doctors that are trained in the emotional, communicative and technical aspects of making those decisions, and assisting patients,&#8221; said Dr. Richard Reznick, dean of the faculty of health sciences at Queen\u2019s University in Kingston. &#8220;We would.&#8221; . . .
