{"id":576,"date":"2008-09-04T16:41:43","date_gmt":"2008-09-04T16:41:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=576"},"modified":"2013-08-02T19:12:14","modified_gmt":"2013-08-02T19:12:14","slug":"moral-safeguards-for-patients-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=576","title":{"rendered":"Moral Safeguards for Patients, Too"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Letter to the Editor<br \/>\n<em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n4 September, 2008<\/p>\n<p><em>Reproduced with permission <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Jonathan Imbody<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consciencelaws.org\/authors.aspx#Jonathan_Imbody\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The misunderstanding expressed in the Aug. 26 letter, &#8220;Health Care&#8217;s Conscientious Objectors,&#8221; illustrates the need for the conscience-protecting regulation recently proposed by the Department of Health and Human Services.<\/p>\n<p>The regulation would implement 35 years of civil rights laws passed by Congress to protect health-care professionals from discrimination, coercion and job loss for adhering to life-affirming ethical standards. The regulation would simply disallow forcing professionals to perform elective abortions and other procedures that violate millennia of medical ethics codes.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to the letter&#8217;s assertion, health-care professionals would continue to care as always for wounded soldiers, AIDS patients, post-abortive teenagers, felons and drunk drivers.
