{"id":5480,"date":"2015-01-06T08:46:06","date_gmt":"2015-01-06T16:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=5480"},"modified":"2018-03-06T13:49:10","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T21:49:10","slug":"cbc-interviewer-fails-to-ask-tough-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=5480","title":{"rendered":"CBC interviewer fails to ask tough questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author\">Sean Murphy<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consciencelaws.org\/authors.aspx#Sean_Murphy\" target=\"_blank\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A bill has been introduced in the Canadian Senate by Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth to legalize physician assisted suicide and euthanasia.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/HousePublications\/Publication.aspx?Language=E&amp;Mode=1&amp;DocId=6811259&amp;File=27&amp;Col=1\" target=\"_blank\">Bill S-225&#8217;s <\/a>definition of of\u00a0&#8220;assist&#8221;\u00a0 is of particular interest.\u00a0 It means\u00a0 &#8220;to provide the person <strong>with the knowledge<\/strong> <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">or<\/span> means<\/strong> to commit suicide, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">or<\/span><\/strong> <strong>to perform an act with the intent to cause the person\u2019s death<\/strong>.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Consistent with this, an\u00a0&#8220;assisting physician&#8221; is one &#8220;who <strong>provides assistance&#8221; <\/strong>to a patient seeking euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0indicates that indirectly facilitating suicide even by providing information for that purpose is equivalent to more direct forms of assistance, like providing a lethal prescription.\u00a0 Further, it\u00a0implies that\u00a0both providing information to facilitate suicide and actually killing someone are of comparable legal or moral significance.\u00a0 Many physicians and health care workers who object to assisted suicide and euthanasia would agree, and, for that reason, would refuse to refer or otherwise help a patient find someone willing to kill him or assist him in committing suicide.<\/p>\n<p>The point was overlooked during an interview of Senator Ruth by Evan Solomon on CBC Television&#8217;s <em>Power and Politics<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/player\/News\/Politics\/Power%20&amp;%20Politics\/ID\/2623434592\/\" target=\"_blank\">2 December, 2014<\/a>).\u00a0 After discussing the contents of the bill in general terms and asking Senator Ruth about her reasons for introducing it, Solomon raised the issue of conscientious objection:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Evan Solomon:\u00a0<\/strong> A doctor might be watching this, and say, you know, &#8220;Great piece of legislation. What do you do if, what will you do to me if I don&#8217;t want to do this?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Senator Ruth:<\/strong>\u00a0 Nothing.\u00a0 No doctor is coerced to do this, no patient is coerced to do this.\u00a0 This is about choice.\u00a0 The choice of doctors who want to assist in it and their protection . . .<\/p>\n<p>Solomon failed to ask the tough questions.\u00a0 Among them:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If physicians will not be forced to kill patients, will they, nonetheless, be forced to help patients find someone who will?<\/li>\n<li>Why is it that the\u00a0bill is about the choice and the protection of doctors who want to help to kill patients, and not about the choice <em>and protection<\/em> of those who refuse?<\/li>\n<li>When abortion was legalized, politicians and activists promised that no physician would be forced to provide abortions, but refused to include a protection of conscience provision in the law.<sup><a href=\"#001.\">1<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0 Now the College of Physicians of Ontario is proposing a policy that would compel physicians to provide abortions or help\u00a0 patients obtain them.<sup><a href=\"#002.\">2<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0 Dr. Marc Gabel, chair of\u00a0the working group that produced the draft policy, warns that physicians who refuse to do this should get out of family practice.<sup><a href=\"#003.\">3<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0 As written, the policy could be applied equally to euthanasia and assisted suicide.\u00a0 Why does Senator Ruth think that objecting physicians will not be coerced &#8211;
