{"id":5052,"date":"2014-09-02T00:19:47","date_gmt":"2014-09-02T00:19:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=5052"},"modified":"2015-04-16T23:36:14","modified_gmt":"2015-04-16T23:36:14","slug":"freedom-of-conscience-for-ontario-physicians-a-prominent-concern","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=5052","title":{"rendered":"Freedom of conscience for Ontario physicians a prominent concern"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author\">Sean Murphy<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consciencelaws.org\/authors.aspx#Sean_Murphy\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the state regulator of the practice of medicine in the province, is reviewing its policy on freedom of conscience for physicians (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpso.on.ca\/Policies-Publications\/Policy\/Physicians-and-the-Ontario-Human-Rights-Code\" target=\"_blank\">Physicians and the Ontario Human Rights Code<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0A first phase of public consultation\u00a0ended 5 August, 2014 and attracted almost <a href=\"http:\/\/policyconsult.cpso.on.ca\/?page_id=3405\" target=\"_blank\">1,800 responses<\/a>\u00a0in a discussion forum, most supportive of freedom of conscience [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/site\/earlyreleases\/14aug14_controversy-over-doctors-right-to-say-no.xhtml\" target=\"_blank\">CMAJ<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/policyconsult.cpso.on.ca\/?page_id=3403\" target=\"_blank\">straw poll <\/a>on the consultation page asked the question, <em>&#8220;Do you think a physician should be allowed to refuse to provide a patient with a treatment or procedure because it conflicts with the physician\u2019s religious or moral beliefs?&#8221;\u00a0 <\/em>The results of the survey (the accuracy of which seems uncertain) showed that, of 32,912 respondents, 25,230 (77%) answered &#8220;Yes&#8221;, 7,616 (23%) answered &#8220;No&#8221; and 66 were undecided.<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario Human Rights Commission unsuccessfully attempted to suppress freedom of conscience in the medical profession in Ontario in 2008.\u00a0 In its <a href=\"..\/https:\/\/consciencelaws.org\/publications\/submissions\/submissions-012.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">2014 submission <\/a>to the College, the Protection of Conscience Project stated:<\/p>\n<h5>The Ontario Human Rights Commission made a serious error in 2008 when it attempted to suppress freedom of conscience and religion in the medical profession on the grounds that physicians are &#8220;providers of secular public services.&#8221; In its public perpetuation of this error, the Commission has contributed significantly to anti-religious sentiments and a climate of religious intolerance in Ontario.
