{"id":5038,"date":"2014-08-28T01:50:33","date_gmt":"2014-08-28T08:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=5038"},"modified":"2018-03-05T20:04:10","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T04:04:10","slug":"medical-association-vows-to-protect-conscience-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=5038","title":{"rendered":"Medical association vows to protect conscience rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Catholic Register<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"author\">Michael Swan<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Medical Association has passed a new policy on conscience rights that supports a doctor\u2019s right to choose whether or not to help patients commit suicide in jurisdictions where it may become legal.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"itemFullText\">\u201cIf the law were to change, then we would support the right of physicians to follow their conscience. It (the new policy) doesn\u2019t say we favour a change in the law,\u201d said Dr. Jeff Blackmer, the CMA\u2019s executive director of ethics. The CMA stance opposing euthanasia remains in place. \u201cOur position is still that Canadian physicians should not participate in euthanasia or assisted suicide,\u201d Blackmer said. The CMA will come to the defence of doctors who refuse to participate in euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide if the law changes to make those practices legal. . .
