{"id":4331,"date":"2013-08-21T00:41:23","date_gmt":"2013-08-21T07:41:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=4331"},"modified":"2018-03-05T21:21:00","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T05:21:00","slug":"canadian-medical-association-affirms-physician-freedom-of-conscience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=4331","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Medical Association affirms physician freedom of conscience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the 146th Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Medical Association in Calgary, Alberta, discussion of motions concerning euthanasia and assisted suicide demonstrated how contentious the issues are for physicians.\u00a0 The delegates could not even agree upon what terminology should be used for the procedures, referring the question to the CMA board of directors.\u00a0 [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/news\/Doctors+vote+against+motion+debate+euthanasia\/8817545\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver Sun<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/site\/earlyreleases\/21aug13_CMA_delegates_defer_call_for_discussion_of_medically_assisted_death.xhtml\" target=\"_blank\">CMAJ<\/a>] However, delegates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cma.ca\/council-delegates-discuss-end-of-life-care\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;easily&#8221; passed <\/a>a motion put forward by one of the delegates to support physician freedom of conscience:<\/p>\n<h5>The Canadian Medical Association supports the right of any physician to exercise conscientious objection when faced with a request for medical aid in dying.
