The\u00a0nurses are backed by a February 26 administrative memo obtained by this\u00a0 magazine which states that for Maternity Care Centre (MCC) staff, &#8220;not\u00a0participating in terminations is not an option.&#8221;<\/h5>\n<p>At Calgary&#8217;s Foothills Hospital some premature\u00a0infants are born alive, then routinely allowed to die. For instance, last\u00a0 August a doctor told a mother-to-be that her baby suffered from lethal\u00a0genetic defects. The mother was persuaded to undergo a &#8220;genetic<br \/>\ntermination,&#8221; and a regularly used procedure called an induction abortion\u00a0was performed only five weeks before the baby was due. Chemically induced\u00a0labour was followed by a live birth. But because the mother had decided her\u00a0child should not live, nurses were forbidden to provide even such basics as\u00a0food and fluids.
