{"id":3206,"date":"2013-07-31T23:59:41","date_gmt":"2013-07-31T23:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=3206"},"modified":"2013-08-01T21:23:03","modified_gmt":"2013-08-01T21:23:03","slug":"update-on-american-hhs-controversy-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=3206","title":{"rendered":"Update on American HHS controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a result of continuing concerns about the HHS preventive service mandate, the chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops&#8217; (USCCB) Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty, the\u00a0president of the Southern Baptist Convention&#8217;s Ethics &amp; Religious Liberty Commission, and over 100 prominent national religious leaders and scholars\u00a0have signed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/issues-and-action\/religious-liberty\/upload\/standing-together-for-religious-freedom.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">an open letter <\/a>to the\u00a0Obama administration\u00a0entitled <em>Standing Together for Religious Freedom. <\/em>The\u00a0letter calls on the Administration and Congress to respect conscience rights\u00a0 and religious freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Georgetown University, a Catholic institution, has announced that it considers the Obama administration&#8217;s\u00a0revised\u00a0contraceptive mandate\u00a0acceptable. The president of Georgetown <a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgetown.edu\/president-messages-Health-Care-Plans-Update-July-2013\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">stated<\/a> that the new regulation provides\u00a0&#8220;the opportunity to reconcile our religious identity and our commitment to providing access to affordable healthcare.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Similarly, the Catholic Health Care Association states that it is satisfied that its members will not have to\u00a0 &#8220;contract, provide, pay or refer for contraceptive coverage.&#8221; The Association includes over 600 hospitals and 1400 other health facilities in every American state and in Washington, D.C. [<a href=\"http:\/\/ncronline.org\/news\/politics\/catholic-health-association-claims-hhs-victory-bishops-continue-contraception-fight\" target=\"_blank\">NCR<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>A federal court granted a preliminary injunction to Hobby Lobby.\u00a0 The business is operated by its owners in accordance with their Christian convictions.\u00a0 The Green family does not object to contraception, but rejects the IUD and morning-after pill because of concern about embryocidal effects.\u00a0 The court ruled that the injunction was warranted because of \u201csubstantial public interest in ensuring that no individual or corporation has their legs cut out from under them while these difficult issues are resolved.\u201d\u00a0[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.becketfund.org\/hobby-lobby-wins-preliminary-injunction\/\" target=\"_blank\">Becket Fund<\/a>]\u00a0 In contrast,\u00a0a federal appeals court has rejected the appeal of Mennonite owners of Conestoga Wood Specialties Corporation against a lower court ruling that held they must comply with the regulation.\u00a0 In a 2- 1 decision, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a corporation cannot be said to share an\u00a0owner&#8217;s religious convictions.\u00a0[<a href=\"http:\/\/lancasteronline.com\/article\/local\/875985_Conestoga-Wood-Specialties-loses-health-care-law-challenge-in-federal-court.html\" target=\"_blank\">Lancasteronline<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a result of continuing concerns about the HHS preventive service mandate, the chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops&#8217;
