A U.S. District Judge has dismissed suits\u00a0 filed by the Archdiocese of Washington and four other Catholic nonprofit groups on the grounds that the suits are premature [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-01-25\/catholic-church-birth-control-suit-thrown-out-by-judge.html\">Bloomberg<\/a>] Lawsuits filed by <strong>Colorado<\/strong> Christian University and Notre Dame University in <strong>Indiana<\/strong> have also been dismissed [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coloradoan.com\/viewart\/20130109\/NEWS11\/301090020\/Judge-dismisses-Colorado-Christian-University-s-challenge-Obamacare\">The Coloradoan<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/blogs\/firstthoughts\/2013\/01\/04\/notre-dame-hhs-mandate-lawsuit-dismissed\/\"> First Things<\/a>].\u00a0 The Catholic diocese of Nashville, <strong> Tennessee<\/strong> and seven other groups in the state are appealing a lower court ruling against them[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/article\/20130110\/NEWS06\/301100048\/Nashville-Catholics-continue-fight-against-birth-control-mandate-insurance?nclick_check=1\">The Tennessean<\/a>].\u00a0 In <strong>Illinois<\/strong>, a temporary injunction has been granted against state legislation that is similar to the HHS regulation because the state&#8217;s Religious Freedom Restoration Act and <a href=\"\/inetpub\/wwwroot\/project\/_research\/law\/laws\/usa-illinois.aspx\"> Health Care Right of Conscience Act<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiabulletin.org\/world\/2013\/01\/17\/NEWS-2\/\">Georgia Bulletin<\/a>].\u00a0 However, the U.S. federal government is appealing a decision to grant a temporary injunction against the HHS regulation to Tyndale House Publishers Inc. of Illinois [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-01-15\/u-s-appeals-order-freeing-publisher-from-birth-control-rule-1-.html\">Bloomberg<\/a>].A temporary injunction against the HHS regulation has been granted to a <strong>Missouri <\/strong>company, Sharpe Holdings Inc., the third such injunction granted in the state [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlbeacon.org\/#!\/content\/28722\/aca_contraception_mo_courts_010413\">St. Louis Beacon<\/a>].\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Virginia<\/strong> Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli attracted criticism because of his remarks to the effect that the nature of the HHS regulation will only become apparent if people go to jail for refusing to obey it [<a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/archives\/2013\/01\/16\/jail-comments-raise-lots-of-questions\">Reason.com<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>For a map and up-to-date overview of lawsuits filed against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, see the Becket Fund&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.becketfund.org\/hhsinformationcentral\/\">HHS Information Central<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) has filed a lawsuit against the regulation on behalf of two Ohio companies [Lifenews].
