{"id":1633,"date":"2012-02-02T12:05:48","date_gmt":"2012-02-02T20:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=1633"},"modified":"2018-03-09T10:18:13","modified_gmt":"2018-03-09T18:18:13","slug":"erroneous-assumptions-illustrated-by-editorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=1633","title":{"rendered":"Erroneous assumptions illustrated by editorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author\">Sean Murphy<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consciencelaws.org\/authors.aspx#Sean_Murphy\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In an editorial titled, <a href=\"http:\/\/wvgazette.com\/Opinion\/Editorials\/201201310105\">&#8220;Birth Control: Now a human right,&#8221;<\/a> the Charleston Gazette has expressed support for the Obama administrations <a href=\"file:\/\/\/D:\/Project\/My%20Documents\/Project\/issues-legal\/legal065-002.html\">regulation<\/a> that will force objecting employers to provide insurance coverage for &#8220;contraceptive services.&#8221;\u00a0 The editorial illustrates five common unexamined and questionable assumptions frequently made by opponents of freedom of conscience in health care.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First: it assumes that &#8216;birth control&#8217; and &#8216;contraception&#8217; are equivalent terms; they are not.<\/li>\n<li>Second: it assumes that contraception is a form a health care, something that many objectors deny.<\/li>\n<li>Third: in failing to recognize the distinction that objectors make between contraception and treating illness or injury, it draws the erroneous conclusion that they might refuse to treat sexually transmitted diseases.<\/li>\n<li>Fourth: it asserts that birth control (by which it clearly means contraception) is a &#8220;human right,&#8221;
