Bergman<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Conservative Party leader Erin O\u2019Toole recently found himself at the centre of the abortion debate as he hit the campaign trail in advance of the federal election on Sept. 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The controversy arose when he stated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/federal-election-2021\/o-toole-says-pro-choice-position-can-square-with-pledge-to-protect-health-workers-conscience-rights-1.5553045\">he was pro-choice<\/a> while simultaneously claiming that he supported the rights of physicians to deny abortions on the basis of conscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has since <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8130332\/otoole-services-conscience-objection\/\">stepped back<\/a> from that position, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consciencelaws.org\/background\/society\/society021.aspx\">claiming instead<\/a> that physicians must still provide referrals even when they object to providing abortions themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, while referrals are often said to strike a reasonable balance between physician and women\u2019s rights, it\u2019s not clear whether that\u2019s actually true. . . <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/erin-otooles-abortion-stance-serves-neither-physicians-nor-women-166728\">continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Conversation Gwyneth E.
