Asa Hutchinson signed legislation Friday to provide conscience protections for the religious objections of healthcare providers, payers and institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sponsored by Sen. Kim Hammer and Rep. Brandt Smith, both Republicans, \u201cThe Medical Ethics and Diversity Act,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arkleg.state.ar.us\/Bills\/FTPDocument?path=%2FBills%2F2021R%2FPublic%2FSB289.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> S.B. 289,<\/a> will protect medical professionals from providing services that go against their moral, religious or ethical beliefs, such as performing abortions or sex-change surgeries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hutchinson said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.arkansas.gov\/news-media\/press-releases\/governor-hutchinson-issues-statement-on-signing-of-sb289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a> that he \u201cweighed this bill very carefully\u201d before signing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The governor originally opposed the legislation in the 2017 legislative session until it was changed to ensure the ability to exercise the right of conscience is limited to \u201cconscience-based objections to a particular health care service.\u201d . . . <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/new-arkansas-law-protects-religious-conscience-in-healthcare.html\">continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Christian Post Emily Wood Arkansas Gov.
