{"id":10257,"date":"2020-08-24T09:39:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-24T16:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=10257"},"modified":"2020-08-27T09:47:31","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T16:47:31","slug":"pharmacist-freedom-of-conscience-in-alberta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.consciencelaws.org\/?p=10257","title":{"rendered":"Pharmacist\u00a0 freedom of conscience in Alberta"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sean  Murphy<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consciencelaws.org\/authors.aspx#Sean_Murphy\">*<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Code of Ethics (2009)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A protection of conscience provision is found in the Alberta College&nbsp; of Pharmacy <a href=\"https:\/\/abpharmacy.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/CodeofEthicsBooklet_May2014.pdf\"><em>Code of Ethics<\/em> (2009)<\/a>.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.consciencelaws.org\/background\/policy\/regulators-047.aspx#001.\">1<\/a> Objecting pharmacists are directed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>to help patients &#8220;obtain appropriate pharmacy services from another pharmacist or health professional within a time frame fitting the patient&#8217;s needs&#8221; (clause 3);<\/li><li>to arrange their practices so that &#8220;the care of [their] patients will not be jeopardized&#8221; when they refuse to provide services for reasons of conscience (clause 4);<\/li><li>to continue &#8220;to provide professional services&#8221; until another pharmacist or health professional has assumed responsibility (clause 1).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The text seems to presume that the objecting pharmacist need not provide the morally contested service. The requirement to continue to provide &#8220;professional services&#8221; until someone else assumes responsiblity does not impose an obligation to provide it if another professional is not available within the relevant time frame. . .
